The second-grade classes from Metter Elementary School (MES) visited the Fulford Community Learning Center Planetarium at East Georgia State College in Swainsboro, Georgia. The group visited Monday, February 21, and Tuesday, February 22 for an exciting journey to the moon and the sun!
Students experienced hands-on learning using STEM activities to foster creative and problem-solving skills needed in our 21st century. Erin Youmans and Kim Hooks with Magnolia Midlands Georgia Youth Science and Technology Centers (GYSTC) instructed the students throughout the STEM activity that connected to the planetarium show they watched. These activities were part of “Maker Space to Outer Space,” a special project that Magnolia Midlands GYSTC selected to focus on this year. The students experienced what life would be like on the moon by taking part in a planetarium program called “The Accidental Astronaut.”
MES teachers said that the second-grade students will always remember the experience at the Fulford Planetarium and some of them are still talking about how much they loved it. Many students are also discussing the fact that they would love a career in aeronautics or engineering because of their experience. MES second-grade teachers would like to say to the Fulford Planetarium staff, “Thank you for giving our students at MES the best field trip ever!”
