East Georgia State College’s Bobcat Beekeeping Club recently hosted their annual Honey Extraction Party. This event, held in the Luck F. Gambrell Center Rotunda, was attended by over 60 guests which included college employees, students, and community members. The event allowed for the Bobcat Apiary to process almost 30 pounds of honey.
This event is held each year by the Bobcat Beekeeping Club to promote pollinator awareness and allow the community to get a hands-on demonstration of how honey is processed from comb to bottle. Attendees were able to take a turn uncapping wax on honey frames, loading the honey extractor and giving it a spin, filtering the raw honey, and even filling their own bottles to take home and enjoy. There were also many different fun and educational resources available for attendees to take home, including books on pollinators for children and adults, honey fact sheets and recipes, pollinator-supporting seed packs, and more.

Honey processed during this event is bottled and given out during events throughout the year by the Bobcat Beekeeping Club and always sparks great conversations about the benefits of local honey, what to plant to support local pollinator populations, and, of course, lots of fun bee facts.

The Bobcat Beekeeping Club also took their honey to the Kiwanis Ogeechee Fair in Statesboro to enter in their Honey Show. The members had previously discussed how to prepare honey for competition and what the judges look for in the different categories. Their entries in the standard honey competition and black jar, which is judged purely on taste, both took blue ribbons, adding more accolades to the already-award-winning Bobcat Apiary.
East Georgia State College’s Bobcat Beekeeping Club is part of the college’s Bee Campus USA designation through the Xerces Society for Pollinator Protection. EGSC was designated the second Bee Campus USA in Georgia and 16th in the nation in 2016 and has kept their designation in the years since through their commitment to pollinator outreach, education and support.
