Magnolia Midlands Georgia Youth Science and Technology Center and East Georgia State College Team Up on the Honey Bee Project and Bee Cam

On January 15th, 2015, Magnolia Midlands Georgia Youth Science and Technology Center (MMGYSTC) at East Georgia State College received an Innovative Grant from GYSTC, Inc. State Office to fund MMGYSTC’s “Bee-Cause We Love STEM” Family Science Nights at area primary, elementary, and middle schools.  A central component of the Family Science Nights is to raise awareness, interest and concern for the loss of honey bees and connect this issue with STEM fields. East Georgia State College has a honey bee hive, known as the Bobcat Apiary, located outside the Academic Building. The hives are maintained by EGSC professor Dr. Paul Cerpovicz.

In support of the honey bee presentations at Family Science Night and to further stimulate on-going interest in the honey bees, the GYSTC Innovative Grant funds were also used by MMGYSTC to purchase a honey bee camera and camera software. The “bee cam” and software were installed by East Georgia State College IT Department. The software allows live streaming of honey bee activity at the EGSC hive. The EGSC IT Departments hosts the EGSC honey bee webpage and streaming.   As a result, the EGSC honey bee hive will be able to be watched and observed during the MMGYSTC Family Science Night events.

Through this unique partnership, MMGYSTC and EGSC are promoting the plight of the honey bees and raising STEM awareness in Southeast Georgia and beyond!
