Purpose and Functions

The purpose of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) is to review and evaluate requests by third-party principal investigators to the institution and/or its students for participation in scholarly research studies involving human subjects. The functions of the IRB are to recommend policies and procedures as necessary and proper to accomplish its purpose, and to review the requests to participate, gather additional information as needed to properly consider such request, and render decisions on participation. The Director of Strategic Planning and Institutional Research will serve as chair of the IRB in a non-voting administrative capacity whose functions are to facilitate the updating of IRB policy and procedures and the completion of each review process. Four tenured or tenure track faculty members, one each from the humanities, social science, natural science, and mathematics disciplines, are selected by their peers to serve three-year terms, with vacancies to be filled by a vote of the faculty within appropriate disciplines. In addition, there will be one external representative from the community on EGSC’s IRB to be appointed by the chair to a three-year term subject to the approval of IRB faculty members.
